Rainbow Bridge is an off-grid community and healing sanctuary on 86 acres on the Hāmākua Coast of Hawaiʻi Island. We are exploring what becomes possible when people live with greater intention: caring for the land, growing food, moving toward self-sufficiency, sharing community life, and creating spaces for healing, spiritual exploration, and transformation. We are looking for a mature, broadly skilled builder to join us for an initial three-month working residency and help bring this vision into physical form.

The Role

This is a full-time, hands-on construction role. You will take agreed plans, methods, and priorities and turn them into organized, high-quality work. You may often build independently, but will ideally lead one or two seasonal construction helpers and occasionally guide a larger community effort.

We need someone who can keep the work moving without constant supervision and communicate clearly when questions or unexpected conditions arise.

You will work in close daily collaboration with our Build Director, who holds final responsibility for design, construction methods, technical decisions, priorities, and major expense. You will lead the hands-on execution of that direction, bring forward your experience and ideas, and guide the on-site crew.

The Work

Upcoming projects involve:
• framing and general carpentry;
• concrete, forms, grading, compaction, and drainage;
• water systems, trenching, pipework, and fittings;
• metal roofing and green roofs;
• flashing and waterproofing;
• clay and lime plaster;
• doors and custom finish work;
• renovation and repair of existing and unconventional structures.

You do not need to be a specialist in every trade. You do need to be a strong overall builder with broad hands-on experience. You should be able to read plans, lay out and sequence work, anticipate materials and tools, solve practical field problems, and understand how each stage affects the next. Building here requires particular care. Heavy rain, humidity, mold, insects, strong sun, transportation challenges, and limited material availability all affect how we work. We need someone who can adapt while protecting safety, waterproofing, durability, and long-term quality.

The Person We Hope to Find

We are looking for someone who:

• works well both collaboratively and independently;

• leads without needing to dominate;
• teaches less-experienced people with patience;
• communicates questions and problems early;
• gives and receives direct feedback;
• takes responsibility for mistakes;
• can disagree without turning it into a battle;
• knows when to ask rather than bluff;
• cares for tools, materials, land, and finished work.

You do not need to use spiritual language or follow a particular philosophy. We care much more about how you work, how you treat people, and whether you feel genuinely inspired to use your craft in service of something meaningful. We are looking for someone who understands that how we build is part of what we are building.

Living at Rainbow Bridge

Rainbow Bridge is an active working community, not a retreat or Hawaiʻi vacation. You will be expected to work full-time Monday through Friday, attend weekday morning community meetings, and share in community housekeeping responsibilities. Participation in meditation, ceremony, and spiritual practices is welcome but not required. Respect for these practices, the people participating in them, and the spaces that support them is essential.

Community life asks for honesty, self-awareness, respect for boundaries, and a willingness to communicate directly when challenges arise.
Our jobsites and communal spaces are free from recreational drugs, alcohol, smoking, and vaping. Any permitted ceremonial use takes place only within a specifically held setting and is entirely separate from construction work and ordinary community life.

Practical Details

Initial commitment: Three months

Schedule: Full-time, Monday through Friday

Start period: By agreement

Stipend: Modest stipend

Housing: Glamping accommodation or a rustic cabin

Food: Food staples are provided. Community dinners are shared Monday through Thursday. Our kitchen is mostly vegetarian (local fish as the exception), and community meals are mostly vegan.

Long-term possibility: A longer-term role and residency may be explored if there is a strong mutual fit, but is not promised in advance. The initial three months give both you and Rainbow Bridge a chance to discover whether the work, relationships, community, and way of life are a good fit.
