We are excited to begin construction on a new outdoor classroom in Hawaii at Rainbow Bridge.
This space has been part of our vision for the land for a long time. Once completed, the outdoor classroom will provide a welcoming place for learning, gathering, and connecting with nature on Hawaiʻi Island.
Although construction is only beginning, we are looking forward to seeing this vision take shape. The classroom will help Rainbow Bridge host more workshops, classes, educational programs, and community events while keeping learning closely connected to the surrounding land.
Beginning Construction on Our Outdoor Classroom in Hawaii
The first stage of the classroom build is now underway.
At this point, there is still much work ahead. Building a functional gathering space requires planning, preparing the site, gathering materials, and completing each stage of construction with care.
Beginning the project is an important milestone because it moves the outdoor classroom from a long-held idea into a physical space that the community can help shape.
We plan to share updates as construction progresses and the structure begins to take form.
Creating Space for Nature-Based Learning
Learning at Rainbow Bridge often happens through direct experience.
People may learn by planting in the gardens, caring for the land, participating in natural building projects, attending workshops, or sharing knowledge with other community members. Our new outdoor classroom in Hawaii will provide a dedicated setting for these educational experiences.
Research summarized by the U.S. Department of Education suggests that learning in natural environments may support concentration, engagement, and retention while giving students more opportunities for hands-on exploration.
Rather than separating learning from the natural world, the classroom will allow participants to remain connected to the sights, sounds, and rhythms of the land.

Why an Outdoor Classroom Matters at Rainbow Bridge
Rainbow Bridge Hawaii is a nonprofit sanctuary focused on regenerative education, ecological stewardship, healing, and community-rooted experiences. Many of its programs are designed to help people learn through direct engagement with the land and one another.
A dedicated outdoor classroom will make it easier to support that mission.
Until now, workshops and educational gatherings have relied on the spaces available around the property. The new classroom will create a more consistent location where teachers, students, visitors, and community members can gather.
It will also offer a setting suited to the kind of hands-on, land-based education that takes place at Rainbow Bridge. Participants will be able to discuss ideas in the classroom and then step directly into the gardens, food forests, water systems, or building projects where those ideas can be observed in practice.
Supporting Workshops and Classes on the Big Island
Rainbow Bridge hosts and envisions a wide variety of educational events on the Big Island, including permaculture courses, natural building workshops, food-sovereignty classes, dream-related programs, and other community-generated offerings.
With a Permaculture Design Course planned for January 2027, the new outdoor classroom may provide a valuable space for lessons, discussions, and hands-on learning connected to the land.
The new outdoor classroom in Hawaii will provide additional infrastructure for these programs.
A dedicated learning space may make it easier to:
- Welcome instructors and participants
- Organize educational materials
- Provide shelter during lessons
- Host discussions before and after hands-on activities

Permaculture education on the property includes gardens, tropical food forests, compost systems, water systems, natural building, and community infrastructure. Learning often happens through guided practice, observation, and participation rather than through lectures alone.
The outdoor classroom will help connect structured instruction with this experiential approach.
A lesson about soil can lead directly into the garden. A discussion about ecological design can be followed by observing systems already operating on the property. A natural building class can combine demonstrations and discussion with practical construction work.

A Gathering Place for the Community
The classroom will serve more than formal educational programs.

Community gatherings are already an important part of life at Rainbow Bridge. Weekly Garden Days, for example, bring residents and visitors together to work, learn, share food, and connect with the land.
The new classroom will give these connections another place to grow.
Building Community Infrastructure With Care
Creating a regenerative community involves developing infrastructure that supports both the land and the people caring for it.
Gardens, pathways, energy systems, gathering areas, and educational spaces all contribute to the broader life of the community. Each project requires resources, labor, planning, and ongoing maintenance.
The outdoor classroom build is one part of this continuing process.
As construction moves forward, community members and skilled participants may have opportunities to contribute to the project. Rainbow Bridge welcomes support through volunteering, work trade, skilled trades, teaching, and financial contributions.
