A Slower Start to the Day

For Garret, a three-month work trader at Rainbow Bridge, this Hawaii work trade experience feels different from the outside world. Instead of waking up to stress, speed, and pressure, mornings begin with intention, sunshine, birds chirping, yoga, coffee, and time to breathe before council.

“Here, morning is a sacred time where you don’t have to rush,” Garret shared.

What Work Trade Looks Like at Rainbow Bridge

After the morning council, the community divides up the day’s activities. Work trade tasks may include digging, planting, fencing, gardening, harvesting, and helping care for the land. The work is hands-on, but it is also supported. Garret described Rainbow Bridge’s leadership as clear, helpful, and genuinely happy to guide people through the day.

A Supportive Community in Hawaiʻi

For those wondering what to expect from a work trade in Hawaiʻi, Garret says Rainbow Bridge offers a safe, comforting, and deeply supportive intentional community. Life outside Rainbow Bridge can feel fast-paced and stressful, but here, the rhythm slows down. People share meals, play games, sit around the fire, and communicate in a way that allows everyone to connect extremely deeply.

Experiencing Rainbow Bridge as a Couple

Garret and his partner had been traveling together for two and a half years before arriving at Rainbow Bridge. Staying here together has inspired a new vision for how they want to live.

“Rainbow Bridge has shown us the way we want to live together for the rest of our lives,” he said.

After traveling the world for the last seven years, Garret still describes Rainbow Bridge Hawaiʻi as one of a kind.

“It’s a very unique place. In the last seven years I’ve been all over the world, but there’s nowhere like here.”

Garret’s Advice for Future Work Traders

His advice for future work traders is to bring your authenticity and fully immerse yourself in the experience. Get into the dirt. Pick the fruit. Eat the flowers. Jump in the waterfall!

“The energy that you put into this place is what you get out of it,” Garret said. “My biggest advice is don’t hold back.”

A Meaningful Hawaiʻi Work Trade Experience

For anyone looking for a meaningful Hawaiʻi work trade within a permaculture community, Rainbow Bridge offers more than a place to stay. It offers a chance to slow down, contribute to the land, build real community, and experience a new way of living.
